The community of Wilson is mourning the death of James “JB” Bowman, a beloved firefighter, former chief, and respected community leader whose passing has left a deep void across Wilson and beyond.
For 43 years, JB dedicated himself to Wilson Fire Company #1, serving in numerous leadership roles including Chief and Trustee. Fellow firefighters described him as the kind of man who could always be counted on, whether overseeing projects, helping organize community events, or simply stepping up when someone needed support. The fire company said his impact stretched across generations of volunteers and residents alike. Small towns always have one person who somehow ends up woven into everything. Wilson apparently had JB.
Beyond the fire service, friends and coworkers remembered Jim as a soft-spoken and kindhearted man with a strong sense of humor and an unwavering willingness to help others. Former colleagues recalled his years working in information technology before later becoming a familiar face in the community through local business ownership. Residents fondly shared memories of fish fries, field days, chowder kitchens, and the countless moments where JB’s smile and presence made community gatherings feel complete.
As tributes continue pouring in for JB, many say his legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the firefighters he mentored, and the community he faithfully served for more than four decades. He is survived by his wife Colleen, children, grandchildren, extended family, and the countless friends and firefighters who considered him family.
Jim was loved by so many, including his family. He always had a smile for me and called me us; a nickname given by our grandpa. Rest in peace Jim, and may the peace of God rest upon your family and friends.
