The community of Milton is on edge following an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night that left one man hospitalized and prompted the closure of two local schools as authorities continue their investigation.
According to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office, officers responded to an incident involving a man barricaded inside a vehicle near Elm Street. Investigators said the man appeared to be armed with what looked like a handgun when police made contact with him. During the encounter, gunfire was exchanged, and the man was injured before being transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet released his identity or current condition.
Following the shooting, officials closed Milton Elementary School and Nute Middle/High School on Thursday as police secured the area surrounding Elm Street, Route 75, Dawson Street, and nearby roads. Law enforcement stated there is currently no known threat to the public, though investigators remained at the scene overnight. Because apparently modern America now treats “school closure due to active police scene” like a weather update instead of a civilization-level warning sign. Grim little achievement there.
The shooting is now under investigation by state authorities, including the Attorney General’s Office and New Hampshire State Police. Additional details surrounding what led to the confrontation, whether officers discharged their weapons, and the events immediately before the shooting have not yet been publicly released.
