The community of Fort Collins is mourning the death of Mason Keller, a beloved youth baseball coach, outdoorsman, and devoted father who passed away following a hiking accident near Horsetooth Mountain Open Space on Sunday afternoon.
According to friends and family, Keller, 38, had spent the weekend hiking with longtime friends while enjoying the warmer holiday weather in northern Colorado. Emergency crews were reportedly called after Keller suffered a serious fall along a rocky section of trail during the descent. Despite lifesaving efforts at the scene, he later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.
Mason was widely known throughout Fort Collins for his involvement in youth sports and community programs. For the past six years, he coached recreational baseball and volunteered with local youth training camps, where parents described him as patient, encouraging, and deeply invested in every child he worked with. Outside of coaching, Keller worked as a regional sales manager for an outdoor equipment company and was known for spending nearly every free weekend fishing, hiking, or camping with his two children.
Tributes have continued pouring in across social media from former players, coworkers, and friends remembering Mason for his calm personality, quick humor, and ability to make people feel included. “He treated every kid like they mattered,” one parent wrote. “My son believed in himself because Coach Mason believed in him first.”
He is survived by his wife, Lauren Keller, and their two children, Carter and Avery. A community candlelight vigil is expected to be held later this week at Rolland Moore Park.
Though his passing came unexpectedly, loved ones say Mason’s impact on the Fort Collins community will not be forgotten. Some people leave behind accomplishments. Others leave behind entire rooms full of people who became better because they existed.
